Mahina Lawrence

Mahina Lawrence is a 26-year-old Māori artist crafting music as an escape into peace. After wowing the audiences on Maori TV’s ‘5 Minutes of Fame’ as a 2021 finalist, young songbird Mahina Lawrence caught the attention of Wellington based record label IKON Music who signed her immediately.
The 25-year old vocalist is a Generation Z Maori artist who possesses a unique voice reminiscent of old soul divas such as Etta James and Dorothy Moore, yet she adds her own twist by bringing in a modern R&B feel to her music. Having started her musical journey at the age of 13, she has built up a name for herself in the local Hawkes Bay covers scene with genres ranging from soul to pop to opera. No stranger to the live stage, she was chosen for a lead role in the opera Dido and Aeneas, and was apart of the well-known youth collective called Project Prima Volta.
After signing with IKON Music, she has begun her journey as an originals artist, working with the team that produced one of Aotearoa’s most loved and successful reggae bands Tomorrow People. 2023 will see the team work together to produce an EP that will showcase Mahina’s singing and songwriting ability. She is definitely one to keep an ear out for.
